25 Meter Targets- Using small goals to crush big ones
Issue 136 / 12 Dec 24
Big things are in store for the Walking Point Tribe in 2025. I’m excited to share that I’ve recently switched from Substack to Kit as the newsletter provider.
This change promises a better chance of reaching your inbox and a more streamlined experience for you.
Based on the success of my book Tough Rugged Bastards, I have started working on my next book, tentatively titled: Walking Point- Proven Special Operations Tactics to Achieve Your Life's Missions.
In it, I will go into greater detail on the topics I discuss in these newsletters and provide not only the frameworks I use with the special operators I work with but also the stories behind the frameworks I have developed over my career.
The 2025 newsletters will serve as a rough draft as I consider the topics I want to cover, and the stories I want to tell, and find a way to tie them all together.
I love your comments and questions. They help shape future newsletters and the topics I discuss. I truly appreciate your participation.
I’m committed to keeping this newsletter accessible to as many people as possible, and I’m pleased to announce that the free option will continue.
As a free subscriber, you will receive the weekly newsletter every Thursday morning.
I truly appreciate if you value Walking Point and can support it as a paid subscriber. Paid subscribers will have early access to certain posts, free downloads, and discounts on future offerings. You will also be mentioned in my book’s acknowledgments section.

In the military, before going to the range with a new weapon, we first zero at the 25-meter range. Shooting at a closer target builds confidence and reduces the effects of weather and wind.
If your sights are off, you may well miss the entire target at 300M. That makes it difficult to know where your rounds are impacting.
The same sight adjustments that allow us to hit a 25-meter target will also allow us to hit out to 300 meters.
As you can see in the chart above, between 25 M and 300 M, the trajectory of the round will not deviate more than 5 inches.
We can apply this principle when developing our New Year’s Resolutions.
Rather than starting the new year off shooting on a barely visible distant target, begin on something closer so that you can more easily see the impact your actions are having.
Instead of going from zero gym days per week to seven, start with three. It will be easier to get on target and easier to maintain.
Don't confuse this with lowering your expectations. You are simply identifying the target you want to reach and starting with an incremental win.
If you start shooting at long-range targets immediately, you may not be on paper, making it difficult to establish a shot group. When you get on target, you build confidence.
When you build confidence, you realize that raising your sights to the long-range target requires the same skills you have already developed.
The continued application of the basics that made you successful at 25 meters can take you to 300 meters and beyond.
Until next week,
Keep Walking Point
John
